Things to Do in Arusha



  Masai Market  

From Ata Hotels - Arusha Tourist Hotels to Arusha Villages.

On this trip you will get an idea of day-to-day life in one of the most colourful cities of Tanzania. People of many different tribes and religions live together in Arusha. Your guide will tell you all about it.
Depending on your own personal interests, you will visit colonial buildings, AICC (which houses the International Rwanda Tribunal), the railway station, monuments, a mosque, a local market and local bars.
Not only tourist places will be visited, but also places you would not easily find by yourself as well.

Visit the Sanawari neighbourhood :

On this tour you will visit a batik artist, a local coffin carpenter, a knife grinder, a kettle maker, a hairdresser, including Enyoito secondary school Where you will meet a Secondary Maasai Teacher (Halima Lizer) who will teach you Swahili, a tourguiding school, a village court, have drink in a local bar and get a feel of daily life in this neighbourhood near Arusha. You will also pass by a view point with a magnificient view over Arusha town. This tour can also be done by mountain bike.

Meru Falls hike :

The hike starts at 8.00 am and ends at around 2.00 pm. It leads you to a waterfall on the foothills of Mt.Meru, passing several villages and crossing some woodland.

USA River route :

This tour brings you to some rice and coffee plantations in the area of USA River. Transfer to USA and back to Arusha is by public ‘daladala’. The tour starts at 9.00 am and ends at around 1.00 pm.

Lake Duluti nature walk:

Hop in a dala dala (local transport) that brings you in 20 min to Tengeru, a lively village along the Moshi/Arusha road. You'll find yourself in the middle of a beautiful green countryside.
Your guide takes you through abundant coffee and banana plantations and on a relaxing walk around Lake Duluti Forest Reserve. You'll identify the many different bird species that can be found here.
The walk ends in the village, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink in a local bar and try a chips mayai (chips in an omelet) or a delicious nyama choma, the typical Tanzanian barbeque.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays, you can also take a stroll through the interesting local market.

Local Masai market :

On Masai market days many Masai gather to buy and sell cattle and all kinds of goods. It is a social gathering as well. You will get a first glimpse of Masai life here. Take a look at traditional tools, enjoy the colourful outfits, get an insight in traditional Masai medicine, see how cattle is being inspected and sold, observe a goat being slaughtered and taste the nyama choma ya mbuzi (grilled goat meat).
There is a Masai market in Kisongo, Ngaramtoni, Monduli chini or Meserani, depending on the day of the week. Transfer to and from the market is by public ‘daladala’.

Ngeresi Mountain Biking :

A biking trip of approx. 6 hours on the slopes of Mt.Meru.

African Food cooking :

Your guide will give you a short introduction on Tanzanian food and explain about the different local dishes. After you have decided on the menu you'd like to cook, you'll go and buy all ingredients at the local market.
At a local household in Arusha your guide will show you the cooking utensils that are used in Tanzania, before you can start the actual preparations.
You'll have your meal outside on reed mats under the banana trees. After your meal you can have a short walk around the neighbourhood.

Safari to Arusha national park :

A full day safari with picnic lunch. There is the possibility for a walking safari with an armed ranger in the morning. The rest of the day 4wd safari with Landcruiser with open roof. From here you’ll have splendid views on Mt.Meru in the west and Mt.Kilimanjaro in the east.
